Arithmetic – Ratio & Mixtures · medium
Alloy A has copper and zinc in the ratio 3:2, and alloy B has copper and zinc in the ratio 1:3. Equal weights of A and B are melted together. Find the ratio of copper to zinc in the resulting mixture.
- A. 17:23
- B. 15:23
- C. 17:25
- D. 19:23
Show answer and solution
Answer: A
Take 20 units of each alloy (LCM of 5 and 4). In A (ratio 3:2 of 5 parts): copper = 20×3/5 = 12, zinc = 20×2/5 = 8. In B (ratio 1:3 of 4 parts): copper = 20×1/4 = 5, zinc = 20×3/4 = 15. Total copper = 12+5 = 17, total zinc = 8+15 = 23. So the ratio is 17:23.
