Number system: HCF · medium

The greatest number which divides 319 and 705 leaving remainders 7 and 9 respectively is
  1. A. 12
  2. B. 48
  3. C. 8
  4. D. 24
Show answer and solution
Answer: D
The required number divides 319−7=312319-7=312 and 705−9=696705-9=696 exactly, so it is their HCF. 312=23⋅3⋅13312=2^3\cdot3\cdot13 and 696=23⋅3⋅29696=2^3\cdot3\cdot29, giving HCF =24=24, which exceeds both remainders. Dividing 319 and 705 themselves (without subtracting remainders) gives the wrong HCF.
