A p-n junction diode allows a large current to flow when it is
- A. reverse biased
- B. unbiased
- C. connected to a very low frequency alternating source only
- D. forward biased
Show answer and solution
Answer: D
In forward bias the p-side is connected to the positive terminal of the battery, which narrows the depletion layer and lets a large current flow. In reverse bias the depletion layer widens and only a very small leakage current flows. An unbiased diode has no external current. This one-way behaviour is used in rectification.
