Let h(x)=ln⁡xxh(x)=\dfrac{\ln x}{x} for x>0x>0. Using properties of hh, decide which of the following statements is/are correct.
  1. A. hh attains its maximum value at x=ex=e
  2. B. πe<eπ\pi^{e}<e^{\pi}
  3. C. The equation 2y=y22^{y}=y^{2} has a solution y=4y=4 with y≠2y\neq2
  4. D. 20232024<202420232023^{2024}<2024^{2023}
Show answer and solution
Answer: A, B, C
h′(x)=1−ln⁡xx2h'(x)=\dfrac{1-\ln x}{x^2}, so hh increases on (0,e)(0,e), attains its maximum at x=ex=e and decreases on (e,∞)(e,\infty). Also ab>ba  ⟺  h(a)>h(b)a^b>b^a\iff h(a)>h(b) for a,b>1a,b>1, because bln⁡a>aln⁡bb\ln a>a\ln b is the same as ln⁡aa>ln⁡bb\frac{\ln a}{a}>\frac{\ln b}{b}.
(A) True: maximum at x=ex=e, h(e)=1eh(e)=\frac1e.
(B) True: h(e)>h(π)h(e)>h(\pi) gives 1e>ln⁡ππ\frac{1}{e}>\frac{\ln\pi}{\pi}, i.e. π>eln⁡π\pi>e\ln\pi, i.e. eπ>πee^\pi>\pi^e (equivalently πe<eπ\pi^e<e^\pi).
(C) True: h(2)=ln⁡22=2ln⁡24=h(4)h(2)=\frac{\ln2}{2}=\frac{2\ln2}{4}=h(4), and indeed 24=42=162^4=4^2=16.
(D) False: 2023,2024>e2023,2024>e lie on the decreasing branch, so h(2023)>h(2024)h(2023)>h(2024), which means 20232024>202420232023^{2024}>2024^{2023}, the opposite of the stated inequality.
