Single correct option

2,3-Dimethylbutane-2,3-diol is warmed with conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} to give a ketone P\mathbf{P}. Treating P\mathbf{P} with excess I2\mathrm{I_2} in aqueous NaOH\mathrm{NaOH} and then acidifying the aqueous layer gives a carboxylic acid Q\mathbf{Q}, along with a yellow solid R\mathbf{R}. Q\mathbf{Q} and R\mathbf{R} are, respectively,
  1. A. 3,3-dimethylbutanoic acid and CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3}
  2. B. 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid and CH3I\mathrm{CH_3I}
  3. C. 2,3-dimethylbutanoic acid and CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3}
  4. D. 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid and CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid and CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3}

Step 1 is the pinacol-pinacolone rearrangement. Protonation and loss of water from one tertiary OH\mathrm{OH} gives a tertiary carbocation next to a carbon bearing OH\mathrm{OH} and two methyl groups; a methyl shift then gives a protonated ketone, and deprotonation gives pinacolone, P=(CH3)3C−CO−CH3\mathbf{P}=\mathrm{(CH_3)_3C{-}CO{-}CH_3} (3,3-dimethylbutan-2-one). Step 2 is the haloform reaction, which works for a methyl ketone: the CH3\mathrm{CH_3} is tri-iodinated, hydroxide attacks the carbonyl and −CI3\mathrm{{}^-CI_3} leaves. This produces the carboxylate of (CH3)3C−COOH\mathrm{(CH_3)_3C{-}COOH} and yellow iodoform CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3}. Option A has an extra carbon, C has the wrong skeleton, and B names methyl iodide, which is not the yellow solid.
