Numerical answer

A mixture of 5.8 g5.8\ \mathrm{g} propanone, 3.6 g3.6\ \mathrm{g} butan-2-one, 3.0 g3.0\ \mathrm{g} propan-2-ol and 7.2 g7.2\ \mathrm{g} butanal is treated with excess I2/NaOH\mathrm{I_2/NaOH}. Every compound that can give the haloform reaction does so, and the overall yield of iodoform is 80%80\% based on the moles of each reacting compound. Calculate the mass in grams of iodoform (CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3}) obtained. Use molar masses (in g mol−1\mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}): propanone 5858, butan-2-one 7272, propan-2-ol 6060, butanal 7272, CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3} 394394. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 63.04

The iodoform test is positive for compounds containing the CH3CO ⁣− ⁣\mathrm{CH_3CO\!-\!} group and for alcohols having CH3CH(OH) ⁣− ⁣\mathrm{CH_3CH(OH)\!-\!}, which are first oxidised to the methyl ketone by hypoiodite. Propanone (CH3COCH3\mathrm{CH_3COCH_3}), butan-2-one (CH3COC2H5\mathrm{CH_3COC_2H_5}) and propan-2-ol (CH3CH(OH)CH3\mathrm{CH_3CH(OH)CH_3}) qualify. Butanal, CH3CH2CH2CHO\mathrm{CH_3CH_2CH_2CHO}, has no CH3CO\mathrm{CH_3CO} unit and no CH3CH(OH)\mathrm{CH_3CH(OH)} unit, so it does not. Moles: propanone 5.8/58=0.1005.8/58=0.100; butan-2-one 3.6/72=0.0503.6/72=0.050; propan-2-ol 3.0/60=0.0503.0/60=0.050. Each gives one mole of CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3}, so the total is 0.200 mol0.200\ \mathrm{mol}. Mass at full conversion =0.200×394=78.8 g=0.200\times394=78.8\ \mathrm{g}; at 80%80\% yield =0.8×78.8=63.04 g=0.8\times78.8=63.04\ \mathrm{g}. The mass of iodoform therefore comes only from three of the four compounds; including butanal wrongly would raise the total to 0.272 mol0.272\ \mathrm{mol} of product and give a wrong answer.
