Let an=(3+√5)^n+(3-√5)^n. The remainder when lfloor(3+√5)^21rfloor is divided by 8 is ____.

Numerical answer

Let an=(3+5)n+(3−5)na_n=(3+\sqrt5)^n+(3-\sqrt5)^n. The remainder when ⌊(3+5)21⌋\left\lfloor(3+\sqrt5)^{21}\right\rfloor is divided by 88 is ____.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 7

Since 3±53\pm\sqrt5 are the roots of t2−6t+4=0t^2-6t+4=0, the sequence satisfies an+2=6an+1−4ana_{n+2}=6a_{n+1}-4a_n with a0=2a_0=2, a1=6a_1=6, so every ana_n is an integer. Because 0<3−5<10<3-\sqrt5<1, we have 0<(3−5)21<10<(3-\sqrt5)^{21}<1, hence (3+5)21=a21−(3−5)21(3+\sqrt5)^{21}=a_{21}-(3-\sqrt5)^{21} lies strictly between a21−1a_{21}-1 and a21a_{21}, so its floor is a21−1a_{21}-1. Reducing the recurrence modulo 88 gives a0,…,a4≡2,6,4,0,0a_0,\dots,a_4\equiv 2,6,4,0,0; since an+2≡6an+1−4ana_{n+2}\equiv6a_{n+1}-4a_n, two consecutive zero residues force every later term to be 00, so an≡0(mod8)a_n\equiv0\pmod 8 for all n≥3n\ge3 (and indeed a21=1256350449401856a_{21}=1256350449401856 is divisible by 88). Thus ⌊(3+5)21⌋≡−1≡7(mod8)\lfloor(3+\sqrt5)^{21}\rfloor\equiv-1\equiv7\pmod 8.
