Numerical answer

Methyl α\alpha-D-glucopyranoside (C7H14O6\mathrm{C_7H_{14}O_6}) is treated with excess periodic acid, HIO4\mathrm{HIO_4}. In this reaction only cleavage of vicinal diols occurs and the ring is not opened. Taking molar masses of 194 g mol−1194\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}} for the glycoside and 192 g mol−1192\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}} for HIO4\mathrm{HIO_4}, the mass (in g) of HIO4\mathrm{HIO_4} consumed by 1.94 g1.94\ \mathrm{g} of the glycoside is ____. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 3.84

In the pyranoside ring the carbon atoms C2\mathrm{C2}, C3\mathrm{C3} and C4\mathrm{C4} each carry a free OH\mathrm{OH}, forming two adjacent vicinal-diol cleavage sites (C2−C3\mathrm{C2{-}C3} and C3−C4\mathrm{C3{-}C4}). C1\mathrm{C1} bears the OMe\mathrm{OMe} and the ring oxygen, C5\mathrm{C5} has the ring oxygen and C6\mathrm{C6}, and C6\mathrm{C6} is a CH2OH\mathrm{CH_2OH} attached to C5\mathrm{C5} which has no OH\mathrm{OH}, so no further diol or hydroxy-carbonyl unit is present. Two cleavages consume 22 mol of HIO4\mathrm{HIO_4} per mole of glycoside, and the middle carbon C3\mathrm{C3} is released as formic acid. Moles of glycoside =1.94/194=0.0100=1.94/194=0.0100. Moles of HIO4=2×0.0100=0.0200\mathrm{HIO_4}=2\times0.0100=0.0200. Mass =0.0200×192=3.84 g=0.0200\times192=3.84\ \mathrm{g}.
