One or more options correct

A straight conducting rod of mass 0.10 kg0.10\ \mathrm{kg} and length 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m} slides without friction while remaining horizontal and perpendicular to two parallel conducting rails inclined at 30∘30^\circ to the horizontal. The rails are joined at the bottom through a resistor so that the total circuit resistance is 0.50 Ω0.50\ \Omega (rod and rails resistance included). A uniform magnetic field B=1.0 TB=1.0\ \mathrm{T} points vertically upward. The rod is released from rest; take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The terminal speed of the rod is 43 m s−1\dfrac43\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}.
  2. B. At terminal speed the electrical power dissipated is 43 W\dfrac43\ \mathrm{W}.
  3. C. The time taken to reach half the terminal speed is 0.27 s0.27\ \mathrm{s}.
  4. D. At terminal speed the current in the rod is 43 A\dfrac43\ \mathrm{A}.
Show answer and solution

Answer: A

Rod speed vv is along the incline. The flux through the circuit changes through the component of B⃗\vec B normal to the incline, Bcos⁡θB\cos\theta, so emf =Blvcos⁡θ=Blv\cos\theta and current I=Blvcos⁡θ/RI=Blv\cos\theta/R. The force from the field on the rod is horizontal with magnitude BIlBIl, and its component along the incline is BIlcos⁡θBIl\cos\theta, which opposes motion: F=B2l2vcos⁡2θ/RF=B^2l^2v\cos^2\theta/R. At terminal speed mgsin⁡θ=B2l2vcos⁡2θ/Rmg\sin\theta=B^2l^2v\cos^2\theta/R, giving vt=0.1×10×0.5×0.51×0.25×0.75=43 m s−1v_t=\dfrac{0.1\times10\times0.5\times0.5}{1\times0.25\times0.75}=\dfrac43\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}: (A) correct. Power dissipated =mgvtsin⁡θ=23 W=mgv_t\sin\theta=\tfrac23\ \mathrm{W}, not 43\tfrac43 W: (B) false (that value omits sin⁡θ\sin\theta). Time constant τ=mRB2l2cos⁡2θ=0.267 s\tau=\dfrac{mR}{B^2l^2\cos^2\theta}=0.267\ \mathrm{s} and v=vt(1−e−t/τ)v=v_t(1-e^{-t/\tau}), so half of vtv_t is reached at τln⁡2=0.185 s\tau\ln2=0.185\ \mathrm{s}: (C) false (0.27 s is τ\tau). Current at terminal speed =1×0.5×43×0.8660.5=1.155 A=\dfrac{1\times0.5\times\frac43\times0.866}{0.5}=1.155\ \mathrm{A}, not 43\tfrac43 A: (D) false.
