Single correct option

Two long horizontal frictionless rails 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m} apart are connected at one end by an ideal capacitor of capacitance 0.80 F0.80\ \mathrm{F}. A uniform vertical magnetic field B=2.0 TB=2.0\ \mathrm{T} exists everywhere. A rod of mass 0.20 kg0.20\ \mathrm{kg} lies across the rails and is pulled from rest by a constant horizontal force of 2.0 N2.0\ \mathrm{N} perpendicular to its length. The rails and rod have negligible resistance. The current in the rod is
  1. A. 2.0 A2.0\ \mathrm{A}
  2. B. 0.8 A0.8\ \mathrm{A}
  3. C. 3.2 A3.2\ \mathrm{A}
  4. D. 1.6 A1.6\ \mathrm{A}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 1.6 A1.6\ \mathrm{A}

At speed vv the induced emf is BlvBlv, and with no resistance it equals the capacitor voltage, so the charge is q=CBlvq=CBlv. The current is i=dq/dt=CBl ai=dq/dt=CBl\,a. The magnetic force on the rod is iBl=CB2l2aiBl=CB^2l^2a, opposing the pull. Newton's second law: F−CB2l2a=maF-CB^2l^2a=ma, so a=Fm+CB2l2a=\dfrac{F}{m+CB^2l^2}. Here CB2l2=0.8×4×0.25=0.80 kgCB^2l^2=0.8\times4\times0.25=0.80\ \mathrm{kg}, so a=2.0/(0.20+0.80)=2.0 m s−2a=2.0/(0.20+0.80)=2.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}, constant. Then i=CBla=0.8×2.0×0.5×2.0=1.6 Ai=CBla=0.8\times2.0\times0.5\times2.0=1.6\ \mathrm{A}. The value 2.0 A2.0\ \mathrm{A} is the naive F/BlF/Bl, which would hold only if the rod were not accelerating, and ignores the effective mass added by the capacitor. Energy check: the work done by the force goes partly into kinetic energy and partly into the capacitor, and the two stores, 12mv2\tfrac12mv^2 and 12CB2l2v2\tfrac12CB^2l^2v^2, grow in the ratio m:CB2l2=0.2:0.8m:CB^2l^2=0.2:0.8, so only one fifth of the work goes into kinetic energy here.
