One or more options correct

Two thin concentric conducting spherical shells of radii 0.1 m0.1\ \mathrm{m} and 0.3 m0.3\ \mathrm{m} carry charges +3 nC+3\ \mathrm{nC} (inner) and −1 nC-1\ \mathrm{nC} (outer) and are isolated. Use 14πε0=9×109 N m2 C−2\dfrac{1}{4\pi\varepsilon_0}=9\times10^{9}\ \mathrm{N\,m^2\,C^{-2}}. The two shells are now joined by a thin conducting wire. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. Before joining, the potential of the inner shell is 300 V300\ \mathrm{V}.
  2. B. A charge of 3 nC3\ \mathrm{nC} flows through the wire from the inner to the outer shell.
  3. C. The heat produced in the wire is 330 nJ330\ \mathrm{nJ}.
  4. D. The potential of the outer shell increases after joining.
Show answer and solution

Answer: B

Before joining, Vin=k(qa+Qb)=9×109(3×10−90.1−10−90.3)=240 VV_{in}=k\left(\dfrac{q}{a}+\dfrac{Q}{b}\right)=9\times10^{9}\left(\dfrac{3\times10^{-9}}{0.1}-\dfrac{10^{-9}}{0.3}\right)=240\ \mathrm{V}, not 300 V300\ \mathrm{V} (that ignores the negative outer charge), so (A) is wrong. Outer shell potential is k(q+Q)/b=60 Vk(q+Q)/b=60\ \mathrm{V}. Joining the shells makes them equipotential, and all charge of a conductor connected to an enclosing shell resides on the outer surface, so the inner shell is left with zero charge and the full +3 nC+3\ \mathrm{nC} moves outward; (B) is correct. The outer potential is still k(2 nC)/0.3=60 Vk(2\ \mathrm{nC})/0.3=60\ \mathrm{V}, unchanged, so (D) is wrong. Energy before is 12(qVin+QVout)=330 nJ\tfrac12(qV_{in}+QV_{out})=330\ \mathrm{nJ} and after is 12(2 nC)(60 V)=60 nJ\tfrac12(2\ \mathrm{nC})(60\ \mathrm{V})=60\ \mathrm{nJ}, so the heat is 270 nJ270\ \mathrm{nJ}; 330 nJ330\ \mathrm{nJ} is only the initial energy, so (C) is wrong. Correct option: B only.
