Numerical answer

Free-radical monochlorination of 22-methylbutane is carried out and every possible constitutional isomer of C5H11Cl\mathrm{C_5H_{11}Cl} is formed. What is the total number of monochloro products, counting each stereoisomer (enantiomer) as a separate compound?

Answer: 6

22-Methylbutane, (CH3)2CH−CH2−CH3\mathrm{(CH_3)_2CH{-}CH_2{-}CH_3}, has four types of hydrogens, so four constitutional monochlorides arise. Substitution at the methyl groups on C2\mathrm{C2} gives 11-chloro-22-methylbutane, whose C2\mathrm{C2} carries H\mathrm{H}, CH3\mathrm{CH_3}, CH2CH3\mathrm{CH_2CH_3} and CH2Cl\mathrm{CH_2Cl}, so it is chiral: 22 stereoisomers. Substitution at C2\mathrm{C2} gives 22-chloro-22-methylbutane (two methyls on the carbon, achiral): 11. Substitution at C3\mathrm{C3} gives 22-chloro-33-methylbutane, with the new stereocentre at the carbon bearing Cl\mathrm{Cl}, H\mathrm{H}, CH3\mathrm{CH_3} and isopropyl: chiral, 22 stereoisomers. Substitution at the terminal C4\mathrm{C4} gives 11-chloro-33-methylbutane, which is achiral: 11. The total is 2+1+2+1=62+1+2+1=6.
