Numerical answer

(R)(R)-Limonene (1-methyl-4-isopropenylcyclohex-1-ene, C10H16\mathrm{C_{10}H_{16}}) is treated with excess O3\mathrm{O_3} followed by Zn/H2O\mathrm{Zn/H_2O}. The organic product X\mathbf{X} (C9H14O3\mathrm{C_9H_{14}O_3}, other than formaldehyde) is then treated with excess I2/NaOH\mathrm{I_2/NaOH}. Assuming that no intramolecular condensation occurs, find (moles of O3\mathrm{O_3} consumed per mole of limonene) ++ (moles of CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3} formed per mole of X\mathbf{X}).

Answer: 4

Limonene has two C=C bonds: the trisubstituted ring alkene and the 1,1-disubstituted isopropenyl group. With excess ozone both are cleaved, so 22 mol of O3\mathrm{O_3} are consumed. Reductive work-up of the ring alkene opens the ring to give a methyl ketone at the former C1\mathrm{C1} and an aldehyde at the former C2\mathrm{C2}; the isopropenyl group gives a methyl ketone on the ring carbon and releases HCHO\mathrm{HCHO}. Thus X=CH3CO−CH2CH2−CH(COCH3)−CH2−CHO\mathbf{X}=\mathrm{CH_3CO{-}CH_2CH_2{-}CH(COCH_3){-}CH_2{-}CHO}, C9H14O3\mathrm{C_9H_{14}O_3}. Under I2/NaOH\mathrm{I_2/NaOH} each CH3C(=O)−\mathrm{CH_3C(=O){-}} group is converted to CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3} plus a carboxylate. There are two such methyl ketone groups, so 22 mol of CHI3\mathrm{CHI_3} form; the aldehyde does not give iodoform. The total is 2+2=42+2=4.
