Single correct option

Let N=(021002000)N=\begin{pmatrix}0&2&1\\0&0&2\\0&0&0\end{pmatrix} and A=I+NA=I+N. If aka_k denotes the element in the first row and third column of AkA^k, then ∑k=110ak\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{10}a_k equals
  1. A. 715715
  2. B. 220220
  3. C. 605605
  4. D. 13751375
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 715715

N3=ON^3=O, so by the binomial theorem (as II and NN commute) Ak=I+kN+(k2)N2A^k=I+kN+\binom{k}{2}N^2. Here N2=(004000000)N^2=\begin{pmatrix}0&0&4\\0&0&0\\0&0&0\end{pmatrix}. Therefore ak=k⋅1+(k2)⋅4a_k=k\cdot1+\binom k2\cdot4. Then ∑k=110ak=∑k+4∑(k2)=55+4(113)=55+4⋅165=715\sum_{k=1}^{10}a_k=\sum k+4\sum\binom k2=55+4\binom{11}{3}=55+4\cdot165=715 (confirmed by direct matrix powers). Omitting the factor 44 gives 220220, the other options come from similar slips.
