Numerical answer

A gas mixture contains SO2\mathrm{SO_2} (mole fraction 0.400.40) and CH4\mathrm{CH_4} (mole fraction 0.600.60). It is allowed to effuse through a tiny pin-hole into an evacuated chamber, and the gas collected there is then allowed to effuse through a second identical pin-hole into a second evacuated chamber. The pressure is low enough for effusion (not flow) at each hole. Taking M(SO2)=64M(\mathrm{SO_2})=64 and M(CH4)=16 g mol−1M(\mathrm{CH_4})=16\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}, the mole fraction of SO2\mathrm{SO_2} in the gas collected in the second chamber is (give the answer correct to two decimal places)

Answer: 0.14

The number of molecules of a component crossing a pin-hole per unit time is proportional to (mole fraction)/M/\sqrt{M} at fixed total pressure and temperature, so the composition of the effused gas differs from that of the source. Stage 1: n(CH4):n(SO2)=0.60/160.40/64=0.150.05=3n(\mathrm{CH_4}):n(\mathrm{SO_2})=\dfrac{0.60/\sqrt{16}}{0.40/\sqrt{64}}=\dfrac{0.15}{0.05}=3. The gas in chamber 1 therefore has CH4:SO2=3:1\mathrm{CH_4}:\mathrm{SO_2}=3:1. Stage 2 enriches the light gas again by the factor 64/16=2\sqrt{64/16}=2: CH4:SO2=3×2=6:1\mathrm{CH_4}:\mathrm{SO_2}=3\times2=6:1. The mole fraction of SO2\mathrm{SO_2} is 11+6=0.1429≈0.14\dfrac{1}{1+6}=0.1429\approx0.14. A common error is to apply the enrichment only once, which gives SO2\mathrm{SO_2} fraction 1/4=0.251/4=0.25, or to ignore the composition change in the source and use 0.400.40 throughout.
