Single correct option

In a Young's double-slit experiment the slits are 1.0 mm1.0\ \mathrm{mm} apart and the screen is 1.0 m1.0\ \mathrm{m} from them. The entire apparatus is immersed in water of refractive index 4/34/3 and illuminated with light of vacuum wavelength 500 nm500\ \mathrm{nm}. A thin glass sheet of refractive index 1.51.5 and thickness 24 μm24\ \mu\mathrm{m} is placed in front of one slit. The central maximum shifts on the screen by
  1. A. 12 mm12\ \mathrm{mm}
  2. B. 4 mm4\ \mathrm{mm}
  3. C. 3 mm3\ \mathrm{mm}
  4. D. 1.5 mm1.5\ \mathrm{mm}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 3 mm3\ \mathrm{mm}

The sheet adds an optical path (μg−μw)t(\mu_g-\mu_w)t relative to the water-filled path, where μg=1.5\mu_g=1.5, μw=4/3\mu_w=4/3, t=24 μmt=24\ \mu\mathrm{m}: (1.5−43)(24 μm)=4 μm(1.5-\tfrac43)(24\ \mu\mathrm{m})=4\ \mu\mathrm{m}. A point at distance xx from the centre has geometrical path difference xd/Dxd/D in water, i.e. optical path difference μwxd/D\mu_w xd/D. The central maximum moves to where this cancels the sheet's contribution: μwxd/D=(μg−μw)t\mu_w x d/D=(\mu_g-\mu_w)t. So x=(μg−μw)tDμwd=4×10−6×1(4/3)×10−3=3 mmx=\dfrac{(\mu_g-\mu_w)tD}{\mu_w d}=\dfrac{4\times10^{-6}\times1}{(4/3)\times10^{-3}}=3\ \mathrm{mm}. The value 12 mm12\ \mathrm{mm} is the air result (μg−1)tD/d(\mu_g-1)tD/d, and 4 mm4\ \mathrm{mm} forgets to divide by μw\mu_w. This corresponds to 88 fringe widths of 0.375 mm0.375\ \mathrm{mm}.
