Numerical answer

A string of length 77 is formed using the letters AA, BB, CC such that it begins with AA, no two adjacent letters are the same, and all three letters occur at least once. The number of such strings is ______.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 62

Strings of length 77 starting with AA with no two adjacent letters equal: each of the remaining 66 positions has exactly 22 choices (any letter except the previous one), giving 26=642^6=64 strings. Now remove those in which a letter is missing. The letter AA is present at the start, so the missing letter is BB or CC. If CC is missing, the string must alternate ABABABAABABABA, which is exactly 11 string. Likewise if BB is missing, only ACACACAACACACA works. These two cases cannot overlap, because a string using only AA cannot satisfy the adjacency rule. Therefore the required count is 64−1−1=6264-1-1=62. A computer enumeration of all 373^7 strings confirms 6262.
