Numerical answer

Let f(x)=x3−3xf(x)=x^3-3x. The number of distinct real solutions of f(f(x))=0f(f(x))=0 is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 9

Since f(t)=0f(t)=0 has roots t=0,±3t=0,\pm\sqrt3, we need f(x)∈{0,3,−3}f(x)\in\{0,\sqrt3,-\sqrt3\}. The graph of ff has a local maximum 22 at x=−1x=-1 and a local minimum −2-2 at x=1x=1. For any constant cc with ∣c∣<2|c|<2, the horizontal line y=cy=c meets the cubic in exactly three points. Because 00, 3\sqrt3 and −3-\sqrt3 all lie in (−2,2)(-2,2) (as 3≈1.73\sqrt3\approx1.73), each equation f(x)=cf(x)=c gives three distinct real roots. Different values of cc give different xx, so the total is 3×3=93\times3=9.
