Numerical answer

A 0.1000.100 mol mixture of FeC2O4\mathrm{FeC_2O_4} and Fe2(C2O4)3\mathrm{Fe_2(C_2O_4)_3} is titrated in acidic solution with KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} (which is reduced to Mn2+\mathrm{Mn^{2+}}) and requires exactly 0.09000.0900 mol of KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} for complete oxidation of both iron(II) and oxalate. The amount of Fe2(C2O4)3\mathrm{Fe_2(C_2O_4)_3} in the mixture, in units of 10−210^{-2} mol, is ____ .

Answer: 5

Work with equivalents. Each MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-} gains 5e−5e^-, so 0.09000.0900 mol corresponds to 0.4500.450 equivalents. In FeC2O4\mathrm{FeC_2O_4} both Fe2+→Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}\to Fe^{3+}} (1 electron) and C2O42−→2CO2\mathrm{C_2O_4^{2-}\to2CO_2} (2 electrons) are oxidised, so its nn-factor is 33. In Fe2(C2O4)3\mathrm{Fe_2(C_2O_4)_3} iron is already Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{3+}} and only the three oxalate ions react, so its nn-factor is 3×2=63\times2=6. Let the amounts be aa and bb mol: a+b=0.100a+b=0.100 and 3a+6b=0.4503a+6b=0.450. Substituting a=0.100−ba=0.100-b gives 0.300+3b=0.4500.300+3b=0.450, so b=0.0500b=0.0500 mol, equal to 5×10−25\times10^{-2} mol (and a=0.0500a=0.0500 mol). A common mistake is to give Fe2(C2O4)3\mathrm{Fe_2(C_2O_4)_3} an nn-factor of 99 by also oxidising iron which is not oxidisable. The answer is 55.
