Single correct option

A uniform solid cylinder of length 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m} and density 0.8 g cm−30.8\ \mathrm{g\,cm^{-3}} floats upright in a liquid of density 1.0 g cm−31.0\ \mathrm{g\,cm^{-3}} in a lift. The lift accelerates upwards at 2.5 m s−22.5\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} and the cylinder is pressed slightly down and released, performing small vertical oscillations. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. The time period of the oscillation is nearest to
  1. A. 1.26 s1.26\ \mathrm{s}
  2. B. 1.12 s1.12\ \mathrm{s}
  3. C. 1.41 s1.41\ \mathrm{s}
  4. D. 1.45 s1.45\ \mathrm{s}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1.12 s1.12\ \mathrm{s}

In the lift's frame the effective gravity is geff=g+a=12.5 m s−2g_{\text{eff}}=g+a=12.5\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Equilibrium submersion depth hh follows from ρcL=ρlh\rho_c L=\rho_l h (the effective gravity cancels), so h=0.8×0.50=0.40 mh=0.8\times0.50=0.40\ \mathrm{m}. If the cylinder is displaced by xx, the net restoring force is ρlAgeffx\rho_l A g_{\text{eff}}x while its mass is ρcAL\rho_cAL, so ω2=ρlgeffρcL=geffh\omega^2=\dfrac{\rho_l g_{\text{eff}}}{\rho_c L}=\dfrac{g_{\text{eff}}}{h}. Thus T=2πh/geff=2π0.40/12.5=1.12 sT=2\pi\sqrt{h/g_{\text{eff}}}=2\pi\sqrt{0.40/12.5}=1.12\ \mathrm{s}. Using gg alone gives 2π0.40/10=1.26 s2\pi\sqrt{0.40/10}=1.26\ \mathrm{s}, using LL in place of hh together with gg gives 2π0.50/10=1.41 s2\pi\sqrt{0.50/10}=1.41\ \mathrm{s}, and using g−ag-a gives 1.45 s1.45\ \mathrm{s}. The result does not depend on the cross-sectional area, and doubling the length of the cylinder would scale the period by 2\sqrt2 because hh would double. A free-falling lift (a=−ga=-g) would give no restoring force at all, which is a useful limiting check on the factor g+ag+a.
