Single correct option

The line L1: x−11=y−2−1=z−32L_1:\ \dfrac{x-1}{1}=\dfrac{y-2}{-1}=\dfrac{z-3}{2} and the line L2L_2 passing through (0,1,−1)(0,1,-1) with direction ratios 2,1,−12,1,-1 are skew. Let Π\Pi be the plane that contains L1L_1 and is parallel to L2L_2. The distance of the point (2,0,1)(2,0,1) from Π\Pi is
  1. A. 1635\dfrac{16}{\sqrt{35}}
  2. B. 1734\dfrac{17}{\sqrt{34}}
  3. C. 1735\dfrac{17}{\sqrt{35}}
  4. D. 1835\dfrac{18}{\sqrt{35}}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 1735\dfrac{17}{\sqrt{35}}

The normal of Π\Pi is perpendicular to both direction vectors, so n⃗=(1,−1,2)×(2,1,−1)=(−1,5,3)\vec n=(1,-1,2)\times(2,1,-1)=(-1,5,3) and ∣n⃗∣=35|\vec n|=\sqrt{35}. Since Π\Pi contains the point (1,2,3)(1,2,3) of L1L_1, its equation is −(x−1)+5(y−2)+3(z−3)=0-(x-1)+5(y-2)+3(z-3)=0, i.e. −x+5y+3z−18=0-x+5y+3z-18=0. For the point (2,0,1)(2,0,1): −2+0+3−18=−17-2+0+3-18=-17, so the distance is 1735\frac{17}{\sqrt{35}}. Note that the shortest distance between L1L_1 and L2L_2 (the distance of (0,1,−1)(0,1,-1) from Π\Pi) is 1635\frac{16}{\sqrt{35}}, which is option (A); it answers a different question. Options (B) and (D) come from an arithmetic slip in the normal's length or in the constant term.
