Vec r=(hat i+2hat j+3hat k)+t(hat i-hat j+2hat k) and L2: vec r=(2hat i+hat k)+s(2hat i+hat j-hat k). Let Pi be the plane containing L1 and parallel…

Single correct option

Consider the lines L1: r⃗=(i^+2j^+3k^)+t(i^−j^+2k^)L_1:\ \vec r=(\hat i+2\hat j+3\hat k)+t(\hat i-\hat j+2\hat k) and L2: r⃗=(2i^+k^)+s(2i^+j^−k^)L_2:\ \vec r=(2\hat i+\hat k)+s(2\hat i+\hat j-\hat k). Let Π\Pi be the plane containing L1L_1 and parallel to L2L_2. The perpendicular distance of the point P(4,1,−2)P(4,1,-2) from Π\Pi is
  1. A. 1735\dfrac{17}{\sqrt{35}}
  2. B. 1935\dfrac{19}{\sqrt{35}}
  3. C. 2335\dfrac{23}{\sqrt{35}}
  4. D. 2338\dfrac{23}{\sqrt{38}}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 2335\dfrac{23}{\sqrt{35}}

A normal to Π\Pi must be perpendicular to both direction vectors, so n⃗=(i^−j^+2k^)×(2i^+j^−k^)\vec n=(\hat i-\hat j+2\hat k)\times(2\hat i+\hat j-\hat k). Expanding the determinant gives n⃗=(1−2)i^−(−1−4)j^+(1+2)k^=−i^+5j^+3k^\vec n=(1-2)\hat i-(-1-4)\hat j+(1+2)\hat k=-\hat i+5\hat j+3\hat k, with ∣n⃗∣=35|\vec n|=\sqrt{35}. The plane passes through A(1,2,3)A(1,2,3) on L1L_1, so its equation is −(x−1)+5(y−2)+3(z−3)=0-(x-1)+5(y-2)+3(z-3)=0. The vector AP→=(3,−1,−5)\overrightarrow{AP}=(3,-1,-5) gives n⃗⋅AP→=−3−5−15=−23\vec n\cdot\overrightarrow{AP}=-3-5-15=-23. Hence the distance is 2335\dfrac{23}{\sqrt{35}}. The value 1735\dfrac{17}{\sqrt{35}} is the distance of the point (2,0,1)(2,0,1) of L2L_2 from Π\Pi, which equals the shortest distance between the two skew lines, so it answers a different question. The other choices come from an arithmetic slip in n⃗\vec n.
