Numerical answer
Two parallel chords of a circle of radius 13 cm, lying on the same side of the centre, have lengths 24 cm and 10 cm. Find the distance between the chords (in cm).
Show answer and solution
Answer: 7
Distance of a chord of length c from the centre = √(r² − (c/2)²). For the 24 cm chord: √(169−144) = 5 cm. For the 10 cm chord: √(169−25) = 12 cm. Since both chords are on the same side of the centre, the distance between them = 12 − 5 = 7 cm.
