CAT 2021 Slot 1 DILR: Tea Estate Production

A plantation company owns five tea estates. For the last season, the table gives each estate's plucking area, the green leaf harvested per hectare, the recovery (made tea obtained as a percentage of green leaf by weight) and the share of CTC tea in its made tea. The rest of each estate's made tea is Orthodox tea.

| Estate | Area (hectares) | Green leaf yield (tonnes/hectare) | Recovery (%) | CTC share of made tea (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amguri | 400 | 9.0 | 23.0 | 75 |
| Bhelaghat | 250 | 8.0 | 22.0 | 60 |
| Chandmari | 320 | 9.5 | 22.5 | 50 |
| Dolkhola | 500 | 8.5 | 22.0 | 80 |
| Emrang | 180 | 10.0 | 24.0 | 40 |

Made tea (tonnes) = Area × Green leaf yield × Recovery/100.

All made tea was sold during the season: CTC tea at ₹210 per kg and Orthodox tea at ₹340 per kg. (1 tonne = 1,000 kg; 1 crore = 10⁷.)

Question 1

Single correct option

Which estate earned the highest revenue from tea sales?
  1. A. Amguri
  2. B. Chandmari
  3. C. Dolkhola
  4. D. Emrang
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Dolkhola

Working table:

| Estate | Green leaf (t) | Made tea (t) | Made tea per ha (t) | Orthodox (t) | Avg price (₹/kg) | Revenue (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amguri | 3,600 | 828 | 2.07 | 207 | 242.5 | 20.08 |
| Bhelaghat | 2,000 | 440 | 1.76 | 176 | 262 | 11.53 |
| Chandmari | 3,040 | 684 | 2.1375 | 342 | 275 | 18.81 |
| Dolkhola | 4,250 | 935 | 1.87 | 187 | 236 | 22.07 |
| Emrang | 1,800 | 432 | 2.40 | 259.2 | 288 | 12.44 |

Average price = CTC share × 210 + Orthodox share × 340.

Dolkhola: 935 t × ₹236/kg = ₹22.07 crore, ahead of Amguri (828 × 242.5 = ₹20.08 crore). Dolkhola wins on volume despite the lowest average price, because its made tea is 107 t more than Amguri's.

Question 2

Numerical answer

For how many estates was the made tea produced per hectare more than 2 tonnes?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 3

Working table:

| Estate | Green leaf (t) | Made tea (t) | Made tea per ha (t) | Orthodox (t) | Avg price (₹/kg) | Revenue (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amguri | 3,600 | 828 | 2.07 | 207 | 242.5 | 20.08 |
| Bhelaghat | 2,000 | 440 | 1.76 | 176 | 262 | 11.53 |
| Chandmari | 3,040 | 684 | 2.1375 | 342 | 275 | 18.81 |
| Dolkhola | 4,250 | 935 | 1.87 | 187 | 236 | 22.07 |
| Emrang | 1,800 | 432 | 2.40 | 259.2 | 288 | 12.44 |

Average price = CTC share × 210 + Orthodox share × 340.

Made tea per hectare = yield × recovery: Amguri 9 × 0.23 = 2.07, Bhelaghat 8 × 0.22 = 1.76, Chandmari 9.5 × 0.225 = 2.1375, Dolkhola 8.5 × 0.22 = 1.87, Emrang 10 × 0.24 = 2.4.

Above 2 tonnes: Amguri, Chandmari, Emrang → 3.

Tip: area is irrelevant here — only yield × recovery matters.

Question 3

Numerical answer

What was the total quantity of Orthodox tea, in tonnes, produced by the five estates together?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 1171.2

Working table:

| Estate | Green leaf (t) | Made tea (t) | Made tea per ha (t) | Orthodox (t) | Avg price (₹/kg) | Revenue (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amguri | 3,600 | 828 | 2.07 | 207 | 242.5 | 20.08 |
| Bhelaghat | 2,000 | 440 | 1.76 | 176 | 262 | 11.53 |
| Chandmari | 3,040 | 684 | 2.1375 | 342 | 275 | 18.81 |
| Dolkhola | 4,250 | 935 | 1.87 | 187 | 236 | 22.07 |
| Emrang | 1,800 | 432 | 2.40 | 259.2 | 288 | 12.44 |

Average price = CTC share × 210 + Orthodox share × 340.

Orthodox = made tea × (100 − CTC share)%:

- Amguri 828 × 0.25 = 207
- Bhelaghat 440 × 0.40 = 176
- Chandmari 684 × 0.50 = 342
- Dolkhola 935 × 0.20 = 187
- Emrang 432 × 0.60 = 259.2

Total = 1171.2 tonnes.

Question 4

Single correct option

Which estate earned the highest revenue per hectare of plucking area?
  1. A. Amguri
  2. B. Chandmari
  3. C. Dolkhola
  4. D. Emrang
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) Emrang

Working table:

| Estate | Green leaf (t) | Made tea (t) | Made tea per ha (t) | Orthodox (t) | Avg price (₹/kg) | Revenue (₹ crore) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amguri | 3,600 | 828 | 2.07 | 207 | 242.5 | 20.08 |
| Bhelaghat | 2,000 | 440 | 1.76 | 176 | 262 | 11.53 |
| Chandmari | 3,040 | 684 | 2.1375 | 342 | 275 | 18.81 |
| Dolkhola | 4,250 | 935 | 1.87 | 187 | 236 | 22.07 |
| Emrang | 1,800 | 432 | 2.40 | 259.2 | 288 | 12.44 |

Average price = CTC share × 210 + Orthodox share × 340.

Revenue per hectare = made tea per ha × average price: Amguri 2.07 × 242.5 ≈ ₹5.02 lakh; Bhelaghat 1.76 × 262 ≈ ₹4.61 lakh; Chandmari 2.1375 × 275 ≈ ₹5.88 lakh; Dolkhola 1.87 × 236 ≈ ₹4.41 lakh; Emrang 2.4 × 288 ≈ ₹6.91 lakh.

Highest: Emrang — it has both the best made-tea yield and the richest Orthodox mix. (t/ha × ₹/kg × 1000 gives ₹ per ha.)

Question 5

Single correct option

Next season Dolkhola's area and green leaf yield stay the same, but its recovery rises to 23%. All the additional made tea is Orthodox, while its CTC quantity and all prices remain unchanged. By approximately what percentage does Dolkhola's revenue increase?
  1. A. 4.5%
  2. B. 5.2%
  3. C. 6.5%
  4. D. 7.8%
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 6.5%

Green leaf = 500 × 8.5 = 4,250 t. Made tea rises from 4,250 × 0.22 = 935 t to 4,250 × 0.23 = 977.5 t: an extra 42.5 t, all Orthodox.

Extra revenue = 42,500 kg × ₹340 = ₹1.445 crore.

Old revenue = 935,000 kg × ₹236 = ₹22.066 crore (CTC 748 t × 210 + Orthodox 187 t × 340).

Increase = 1.445 / 22.066 ≈ 6.55% → 6.5%.

Why not 4.5%: that is roughly the tonnage increase (42.5/935), ignoring that the extra tea is sold at the higher Orthodox price (340 vs average 236).
