CAT 2023 Slot 3 DILR: Candidate interview panel schedule

Five candidates — P, Q, R, S and T — are interviewed one at a time in slots 1 through 5 (one candidate per slot, one slot per candidate) on a single day. Each candidate is interviewed by exactly one of three panelists — X, Y or Z (a panelist may interview more than one candidate). The following facts are known:
1. Q is interviewed at some point before R, and R is interviewed at some point before T.
2. S is interviewed in slot 4.
3. P is interviewed in slot 1.
4. Panelist X interviews exactly two candidates, one of whom is P.
5. The candidate interviewed in slot 3 is interviewed by the same panelist as P.
6. Panelist Z interviews exactly one candidate, and it is neither Q nor T.
7. Panelist Y interviews T.

Question 1

Single correct option

In which slot is candidate R interviewed?
  1. A. 2
  2. B. 3
  3. C. 4
  4. D. 5
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 3

P is in slot 1 (clue 3) and S is in slot 4 (clue 2), leaving slots 2, 3, 5 for Q, R, T. Clue 1 requires Q before R before T, and the only increasing assignment of {2,3,5} to (Q,R,T) is Q=2, R=3, T=5. So R is interviewed in slot 3.

Question 2

Numerical answer

In which slot is candidate T interviewed?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5

As derived, slots 2,3,5 go to Q,R,T respectively in increasing order per clue 1 (Q<R<T), so T is interviewed in slot 5.

Question 3

Single correct option

Which panelist interviews candidate R?
  1. A. X
  2. B. Y
  3. C. Z
  4. D. Cannot be determined
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) X

R is in slot 3 (from Q1's deduction). Clue 5 says the slot-3 candidate is interviewed by the same panelist as P, and clue 4 says P is interviewed by X. So R is also interviewed by X.

Question 4

Single correct option

Who interviews candidate S?
  1. A. X
  2. B. Y
  3. C. Z
  4. D. Either X or Y
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Z

X interviews exactly two candidates: P and R (clues 4 and 5). Y interviews T (clue 7). Z interviews exactly one candidate, and it is not Q or T (clue 6); since P, R are with X and T is with Y, the only candidates left for Z among {Q,S} are Q or S, and Z cannot take Q, so Z interviews S. (Q is then interviewed by Y, since X and Z are already full.)

Question 5

Numerical answer

How many candidates does panelist Y interview in total?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 2

From the deductions: X interviews P and R; Z interviews only S; the remaining candidates Q and T must go to Y (clue 7 confirms Y interviews T, and Q is the only one left, since X and Z are full). So Y interviews 2 candidates: Q and T.
