How many litres of water must be added to make the ratio of milk to water 5:4?

Numerical answer

A vessel contains 40 litres of a milk-water mixture in the ratio 5:3. How many litres of water must be added to make the ratio of milk to water 5:4?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5

Milk = 40 × 5/8 = 25 L, Water = 40 × 3/8 = 15 L. Since only water is added, milk stays at 25 L. For the new ratio 5:4, water needed = 25 × 4/5 = 20 L. Water to be added = 20 − 15 = 5 L.
