Numerical answer

The five sentences below, labelled 1–5, can be arranged into a coherent paragraph. Enter the correct order as a 5-digit number.

1. In the 1770s, Joseph Priestley observed that a sprig of mint placed in a sealed jar with a burning candle allowed the candle to keep burning longer than it otherwise would.
2. He correctly inferred that the plant was somehow "restoring" something to the air that the flame had used up, though he could not identify what that something was.
3. It fell to Jan Ingenhousz, a few years later, to show that this restorative effect required light, and occurred only in the green parts of the plant.
4. Ingenhousz's experiments thus connected the process directly to sunlight, a link Priestley's original observation had not established.
5. Together, their work laid the groundwork for what would later be understood, and named, as photosynthesis.

Answer: 12345

Sentence 1 sets up Priestley's original observation. Sentence 2 gives his inference from it. Sentence 3 introduces Ingenhousz's refinement ('a few years later'), which must follow Priestley's work. Sentence 4 elaborates on Ingenhousz's specific contribution (light). Sentence 5 concludes by summarising both scientists' combined contribution. The order is 1-2-3-4-5.
