Two board exams
CBSE approved two Class 10 board exams a year from 2026 under NEP 2020, and held both in 2026. The main exam is compulsory for all students. The second exam is optional and is used to improve marks or to clear a compartment.
- Main exam. Held from mid-February. Every student must appear in it. Results come in April.
- Second exam. Held in May. You can take it in up to three subjects to improve your marks, or to clear a compartment. Only subjects with more than 50 marks of external (board) assessment are allowed.
- Which score counts. For regular students, the better of the two performances is used in the final result.
- Internal assessment. Done only once in the year, before the main exam. It is not repeated for the second exam.
- How to register. Your school submits a separate list of candidates for the second exam after the main-exam result. In 2026 the fee was reported as Rs 320 per subject.
- 2027. The system is in place for 2027. The official date sheet will give the exact dates of both exams.
Exam dates, the 'better of two' rule and 2026 figures are from CBSE's official press release of 18 July 2026. Subject limits, eligible subjects and fee are from news reports of the CBSE scheme and webinar.
