Kohlberg · medium

Rohit says, “I will not copy in the test because the rules of the school say it is wrong and I will be punished.” At which level of Kohlberg’s moral development is his reasoning?
  1. A. Post-conventional
  2. B. Amoral
  3. C. Pre-conventional
  4. D. Conventional
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C
Reasoning based on avoiding punishment and obeying authority because of consequences is pre-conventional (stage 1). Conventional morality would stress being a good member of society and maintaining law and order for its own sake; post-conventional rests on universal principles. The trap is that mentioning ‘rules’ sounds conventional, but the motive here is punishment.
