JEE Advanced 2017 Paper 2 Chemistry: Paragraph 2

An optically active compound X\mathbf{X} (molecular formula C6H12O\mathrm{C_6H_{12}O}) gives an orange-red precipitate with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and a yellow precipitate on warming with iodine and aqueous sodium hydroxide. The acid Y\mathbf{Y} formed in the latter reaction has the formula C5H10O2\mathrm{C_5H_{10}O_2}. Wolff-Kishner reduction (N2H4/KOH\mathrm{N_2H_4/KOH}, heat) of X\mathbf{X} gives a hydrocarbon Z\mathbf{Z} that is optically inactive. X\mathbf{X} does not react with Tollens' reagent.

Question 1

Single correct option

The compound X\mathbf{X} is
  1. A. 4-methylpentan-2-one
  2. B. hexan-2-one
  3. C. 2-methylpentan-3-one
  4. D. 3-methylpentan-2-one
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 3-methylpentan-2-one

The 2,4-DNP test shows a carbonyl group, and the iodoform test shows a methyl ketone CH3CO−\mathrm{CH_3CO-}. So X\mathbf{X} is a methyl ketone, which eliminates 2-methylpentan-3-one. Among the remaining methyl ketones of formula C6H12O\mathrm{C_6H_{12}O} (CH3COC4H9\mathrm{CH_3COC_4H_9}) the candidates are hexan-2-one, 4-methylpentan-2-one, 3-methylpentan-2-one and 3,3-dimethylbutan-2-one. Optical activity requires a stereocentre. Only 3-methylpentan-2-one has a carbon bearing four different groups (H\mathrm{H}, CH3\mathrm{CH_3}, C2H5\mathrm{C_2H_5}, COCH3\mathrm{COCH_3}). The others have no stereocentre. The haloform product Y\mathbf{Y} is 2-methylbutanoic acid, C5H10O2\mathrm{C_5H_{10}O_2}, and Wolff-Kishner reduction gives 3-methylpentane, which is achiral, consistent with all the data.

Question 2

Single correct option

When enantiomerically pure (S)(S)-X\mathbf{X} is reduced with NaBH4\mathrm{NaBH_4} in ethanol (the existing stereocentre does not racemise), the number of different stereoisomeric alcohols obtained is
  1. A. 11
  2. B. 22
  3. C. 33
  4. D. 44
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 22

The alcohol formed is 3-methylpentan-2-ol, CH3CH(OH)CH(CH3)CH2CH3\mathrm{CH_3CH(OH)CH(CH_3)CH_2CH_3}, which has two stereocentres (C2 and C3) and therefore four stereoisomers: (2R,3R)(2R,3R), (2S,3S)(2S,3S), (2R,3S)(2R,3S) and (2S,3R)(2S,3R). The C3 stereocentre of (S)(S)-X\mathbf{X} is not touched by hydride, so it remains fixed. Hydride adds to either face of the planar carbonyl carbon, creating the new C2 stereocentre in both configurations. Since the two faces of the carbonyl are diastereotopic (because of the adjacent stereocentre) the two products form in unequal amounts, but both form. This gives exactly two stereoisomers, which are diastereomers of each other. Four would need both C3 configurations, which requires racemic X\mathbf{X}, and one would need complete facial selectivity, which hydride reduction does not show.
