JEE Advanced 2018 Paper 1 Chemistry: Paragraph 2

An organic compound A (molecular formula C5H10O\mathrm{C_5H_{10}O}) gives a 2,4-DNP derivative and a yellow precipitate of iodoform on warming with I2/NaOH\mathrm{I_2/NaOH}; the acidified filtrate yields a carboxylic acid B (C4H8O2\mathrm{C_4H_8O_2}). Clemmensen reduction of A gives an alkane that forms exactly four constitutionally different monochloro derivatives. B is converted into its acid chloride with SOCl2\mathrm{SOCl_2}, then into an amide with NH3\mathrm{NH_3}. The amide, on treatment with Br2/KOH\mathrm{Br_2/KOH} (Hofmann bromamide degradation), gives an amine C. Take C=12, H=1, N=14, O=16, K=39\mathrm{C=12,\ H=1,\ N=14,\ O=16,\ K=39}.

Question 1

Single correct option

The compound A is
  1. A. Pentan-2-one
  2. B. 3-Methylbutan-2-one
  3. C. Pentan-3-one
  4. D. 2-Methylbutanal
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 3-Methylbutan-2-one

A gives a 2,4-DNP derivative, so it is an aldehyde or ketone. The iodoform positive result requires a CH3CO−\mathrm{CH_3CO-} unit, which excludes pentan-3-one and 2-methylbutanal. This leaves pentan-2-one and 3-methylbutan-2-one. The Clemmensen product of pentan-2-one is n-pentane, which has three monochloro derivatives (1-, 2- and 3-chloropentane). The Clemmensen product of 3-methylbutan-2-one is isopentane, 2-methylbutane, which has four constitutional monochloro derivatives (1-chloro-2-methylbutane, 2-chloro-2-methylbutane, 2-chloro-3-methylbutane and 1-chloro-3-methylbutane). The haloform step then gives (CH3)2CHCOOH\mathrm{(CH_3)_2CHCOOH}, B. A is therefore 3-methylbutan-2-one, (CH3)2CHCOCH3\mathrm{(CH_3)_2CHCOCH_3}, and the other three candidates fail one of the tests.

Question 2

Single correct option

When 8.708.70 g of the amide formed from B undergoes the Hofmann bromamide degradation with 80%80\% yield, the mass of amine C obtained, and the mass of KOH consumed by the stoichiometric reaction (RCONH2+Br2+4KOH→RNH2+2KBr+K2CO3+2H2O\mathrm{RCONH_2+Br_2+4KOH\to RNH_2+2KBr+K_2CO_3+2H_2O}), are respectively
  1. A. 4.724.72 g; 22.422.4 g
  2. B. 5.905.90 g; 22.422.4 g
  3. C. 4.724.72 g; 11.211.2 g
  4. D. 3.543.54 g; 22.422.4 g
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 4.724.72 g; 22.422.4 g

B is isobutyric acid, so the amide is (CH3)2CHCONH2\mathrm{(CH_3)_2CHCONH_2} (molar mass 87) and the amine C is isopropylamine (CH3)2CHNH2\mathrm{(CH_3)_2CHNH_2} (molar mass 59) with one carbon fewer. Moles of amide =8.70/87=0.100=8.70/87=0.100 mol. At 80% yield the amine formed is 0.0800.080 mol, i.e. 0.080×59=4.720.080\times59=4.72 g. The stoichiometry uses 4 mol KOH per mole of amide, so the reaction consumes 0.4000.400 mol KOH =0.400×56=22.4=0.400\times56=22.4 g (the problem asks for the stoichiometric amount, which is based on the amide taken, not on the yield). This matches option A. Option B quotes the theoretical amine mass, C halves the alkali, and D wrongly applies 60% yield.
