One or more options correct

Let f:R→Rf:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R be defined by f(x)=∫0xt ∣t−1∣ dtf(x)=\displaystyle\int_0^x t\,|t-1|\,dt. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. ff is differentiable at every real xx
  2. B. ff has a local minimum at x=0x=0
  3. C. ff has a local extremum at x=1x=1
  4. D. f(3)=296f(3)=\dfrac{29}{6}
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B, D

Since t∣t−1∣t|t-1| is continuous, the fundamental theorem gives f′(x)=x∣x−1∣f'(x)=x|x-1| for all xx, so (A) is true. Now f′(x)<0f'(x)<0 for x<0x<0 and f′(x)>0f'(x)>0 for 0<x<10<x<1, so f′f' changes sign from negative to positive at 00: a local minimum, and (B) is true. At x=1x=1, f′(1)=0f'(1)=0 but f′(x)=x∣x−1∣≥0f'(x)=x|x-1|\ge0 on both sides, so f′f' does not change sign and there is no extremum: (C) is false (although f′′f'' does not exist there). For (D), f(3)=∫01t(1−t) dt+∫13t(t−1) dt=16+[t33−t22]13=16+(92−(−16))=16+143=296f(3)=\int_0^1t(1-t)\,dt+\int_1^3t(t-1)\,dt=\tfrac16+\left[\tfrac{t^3}{3}-\tfrac{t^2}{2}\right]_1^3=\tfrac16+\left(\tfrac92-\left(-\tfrac16\right)\right)=\tfrac16+\tfrac{14}{3}=\tfrac{29}{6}, so (D) is true.
