Numerical answer

An electron in a He+\mathrm{He^+} ion makes a transition from n=4n=4 to n=2n=2, and the emitted photon falls on a metal surface of work function 4.0 eV4.0\ \mathrm{eV}. Use En=−13.6 Z2/n2 eVE_n=-13.6\,Z^2/n^2\ \mathrm{eV}, h=6.626×10−34 J sh=6.626\times10^{-34}\ \mathrm{J\,s}, me=9.109×10−31 kgm_e=9.109\times10^{-31}\ \mathrm{kg} and 1 eV=1.602×10−19 J1\ \mathrm{eV}=1.602\times10^{-19}\ \mathrm{J}. The de Broglie wavelength of the fastest photoelectron, in A˚\mathrm{\AA}, is ____ . (Give the answer correct to two decimal places.)
Show answer and solution

Answer: 4.93

For He+\mathrm{He^+}, Z=2Z=2. The photon energy is ΔE=13.6×4(14−116)=13.6×4×0.1875=10.2 eV\Delta E=13.6\times4\left(\tfrac14-\tfrac1{16}\right)=13.6\times4\times0.1875=10.2\ \mathrm{eV}. By the photoelectric equation the maximum kinetic energy is K=10.2−4.0=6.2 eV=6.2×1.602×10−19=9.93×10−19 JK=10.2-4.0=6.2\ \mathrm{eV}=6.2\times1.602\times10^{-19}=9.93\times10^{-19}\ \mathrm{J}. The de Broglie wavelength is λ=h/2meK\lambda=h/\sqrt{2m_eK}. Computing 2×9.109×10−31×9.93×10−19=1.345×10−24 kg m s−1\sqrt{2\times9.109\times10^{-31}\times9.93\times10^{-19}}=1.345\times10^{-24}\ \mathrm{kg\,m\,s^{-1}}, so λ=6.626×10−34/1.345×10−24=4.93×10−10 m=4.93 A˚\lambda=6.626\times10^{-34}/1.345\times10^{-24}=4.93\times10^{-10}\ \mathrm{m}=4.93\ \mathrm{\AA}. Note that the n=4→2n=4\to2 line of He+\mathrm{He^+} coincides with the energy of hydrogen n=2→1n=2\to1 (10.210.2 eV) because Z2=4Z^2=4 scales every level fourfold. A common slip is to use Z=1Z=1 and obtain only 2.552.55 eV, which is below the work function so that no photoelectron would be emitted at all; the check on the sign of KK is therefore an essential step before applying the de Broglie relation, and the final unit conversion from metres to angstrom is a factor 101010^{10}.
