Numerical answer
A hydrogen-like ion X(Z−1)+ contains a single electron. Photons emitted when its electron falls from n=2 to n=1 strike isolated hydrogen atoms in their ground state (ionisation energy 13.6eV). The photoelectrons ejected have a de Broglie wavelength of 0.139nm. Use h=6.626×10−34Js, me=9.109×10−31kg, 1eV=1.602×10−19J and En=−13.6Z2/n2eV. What is the atomic number Z of the ion?
Show answer and solution
Answer:3
The n=2→1 photon energy is E=13.6Z2(1−41)=10.2Z2eV. It ejects an electron from hydrogen, so the kinetic energy is K=10.2Z2−13.6eV. The de Broglie relation λ=h/2meK gives K=2meλ2h2. With λ=0.139nm, K=2×9.109×10−31×(1.39×10−10)2(6.626×10−34)2=1.247×10−17J=77.8eV. Then 10.2Z2=77.8+13.6=91.4, so Z2=8.96 and Z=2.99≈3. The check with Z=3 gives K=91.8−13.6=78.2eV and λ=0.1387nm, so the ion is Li2+. Since only one value of Z gives a photoelectron wavelength near 0.139nm, and Z=2 gives 0.235nm while Z=4 gives 0.100nm, the integer is unambiguous. Students should also remember that the ejected electron's energy is the photon energy minus the ionisation energy of hydrogen, and not the photon energy itself, otherwise they would obtain Z=77.8/10.2=2.76, which is not an integer.
