Numerical answer

A radioactive nucleus AA of half-life 1.01.0 hour decays to a radioactive nucleus BB of half-life 4.04.0 hours, which decays to a stable nucleus. At t=0t=0 only AA is present. Find the time (in hours) at which the number of BB nuclei is maximum. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 2.67

Let the decay constants be λA=ln⁡2/1 h−1=0.6931 h−1\lambda_A=\ln2/1\ \mathrm{h^{-1}}=0.6931\ \mathrm{h^{-1}} and λB=ln⁡2/4=0.1733 h−1\lambda_B=\ln2/4=0.1733\ \mathrm{h^{-1}}. The rate equation for BB is dNBdt=λANA−λBNB\dfrac{dN_B}{dt}=\lambda_AN_A-\lambda_BN_B with NA=N0e−λAtN_A=N_0e^{-\lambda_At}. The number of BB nuclei is maximum when dNB/dt=0dN_B/dt=0, i.e. when the activities are equal, λANA=λBNB\lambda_AN_A=\lambda_BN_B. Solving the equation gives NB=λAN0λB−λA(e−λAt−e−λBt)N_B=\dfrac{\lambda_AN_0}{\lambda_B-\lambda_A}\left(e^{-\lambda_At}-e^{-\lambda_Bt}\right). Setting its derivative to zero gives tmax=ln⁡(λA/λB)λA−λB=ln⁡40.5199=1.38630.5199=2.67t_{max}=\dfrac{\ln(\lambda_A/\lambda_B)}{\lambda_A-\lambda_B}=\dfrac{\ln4}{0.5199}=\dfrac{1.3863}{0.5199}=2.67 hours. This is the classic transient-equilibrium situation: before tmaxt_{max} the production of BB exceeds its decay and NBN_B rises; afterwards the shrinking supply of AA makes NBN_B fall. Note that the answer does not depend on N0N_0, and it is not simply the mean of the two half-lives or the time when NAN_A equals NBN_B.
