One or more options correct

A sample of Li2+\mathrm{Li^{2+}} ions all in the n=3n=3 state de-excite to the ground state through all possible transitions. The emitted radiation falls on a metal surface of work function 20 eV20\ \mathrm{eV}. Take the hydrogen ground-state energy as −13.6 eV-13.6\ \mathrm{eV} and hc=1240 eV nmhc=1240\ \mathrm{eV\,nm}. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. All three emitted lines are capable of ejecting photoelectrons from the metal.
  2. B. The maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons is 88.8 eV88.8\ \mathrm{eV}.
  3. C. The stopping potential for photoelectrons due to the n=2→n=1n=2\to n=1 line is 91.8 V91.8\ \mathrm{V}.
  4. D. The longest wavelength emitted is 17.0 nm17.0\ \mathrm{nm}.
Show answer and solution

Answer: B

For Li2+\mathrm{Li^{2+}} (Z=3Z=3), En=−13.6×9/n2=−122.4/n2 eVE_n=-13.6\times9/n^2=-122.4/n^2\ \mathrm{eV}. The photon energies are 3→13\to1: 108.8 eV108.8\ \mathrm{eV}, 2→12\to1: 91.8 eV91.8\ \mathrm{eV} and 3→23\to2: 17.0 eV17.0\ \mathrm{eV}. Since 17.0 eV<20 eV17.0\ \mathrm{eV}<20\ \mathrm{eV}, the 3→23\to2 line cannot eject electrons, so only two lines can and (A) is wrong. The maximum kinetic energy comes from the most energetic photon, 108.8−20=88.8 eV108.8-20=88.8\ \mathrm{eV}, so (B) is correct. For the 2→12\to1 line the stopping potential is (91.8−20)/e=71.8 V(91.8-20)/e=71.8\ \mathrm{V}, not 91.8 V91.8\ \mathrm{V} (that forgets the work function), so (C) is wrong. The longest wavelength belongs to the smallest energy: λ=1240/17.0=72.9 nm\lambda=1240/17.0=72.9\ \mathrm{nm}; 17.017.0 is an energy in eV, not a wavelength, so (D) is wrong. Correct option: B only.
