Single correct option

A parallel-plate air capacitor of capacitance 100 pF100\ \mathrm{pF} is charged to 200 V200\ \mathrm{V} and then disconnected from the source. A dielectric slab of dielectric constant 44 and thickness equal to half the plate separation, with the same area as the plates, is now slowly inserted parallel to the plates. The work done by the external agent during the insertion is
  1. A. +0.75 μJ+0.75\ \mu\mathrm{J}
  2. B. −0.75 μJ-0.75\ \mu\mathrm{J}
  3. C. −1.25 μJ-1.25\ \mu\mathrm{J}
  4. D. +1.20 μJ+1.20\ \mu\mathrm{J}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) −0.75 μJ-0.75\ \mu\mathrm{J}

Initially Ui=12C0V02=12(100×10−12)(200)2=2.0 μJU_i=\tfrac12C_0V_0^2=\tfrac12(100\times10^{-12})(200)^2=2.0\ \mu\mathrm{J}. With a slab of thickness t=d/2t=d/2 and κ=4\kappa=4, C=ε0Ad−t+t/κ=ε0Ad(12+18)=1.6 C0C=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{d-t+t/\kappa}=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{d(\tfrac12+\tfrac18)}=1.6\,C_0. The capacitor is isolated, so the charge QQ is fixed and U=Q2/2CU=Q^2/2C falls to Uf=Ui/1.6=1.25 μJU_f=U_i/1.6=1.25\ \mu\mathrm{J}. The slab is pulled into the field by the capacitor itself, so the external agent does negative work equal to the change in energy: W=Uf−Ui=−0.75 μJW=U_f-U_i=-0.75\ \mu\mathrm{J}. The positive value +1.20 μJ+1.20\ \mu\mathrm{J} would be the energy change at constant potential difference (battery connected, Uf=3.2 μJU_f=3.2\ \mu\mathrm{J}). Because the plates are isolated, the field in the air gap stays E=Q/(ε0A)E=Q/(\varepsilon_0A) while the field inside the slab falls to E/4E/4, so the potential difference drops from 200 V200\ \mathrm{V} to 200×58=125 V200\times\tfrac58=125\ \mathrm{V}, consistent with the lower stored energy.
