The plates of a parallel-plate capacitor, each of area 0.10 m20.10\ \mathrm{m^2} and separated by 2.0 mm2.0\ \mathrm{mm} in air, remain connected to a 100 V100\ \mathrm{V} battery. A dielectric slab of dielectric constant 44, thickness 1.0 mm1.0\ \mathrm{mm} and the same area as the plates is slowly inserted, filling half of the gap. Take ε0=8.85×10−12 F m−1\varepsilon_0=8.85\times10^{-12}\ \mathrm{F\,m^{-1}}. Find the work done by the electric field on the slab during the insertion, in microjoules. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 1.33

Initially C0=ε0A/d=4.43×10−10 FC_0=\varepsilon_0A/d=4.43\times10^{-10}\ \mathrm{F}. With the slab the series combination of the air gap and the dielectric gives C=ε0A(d−t)+t/K=ε0A1.0+0.25 mm=ε0A1.25 mm=7.08×10−10 FC=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{(d-t)+t/K}=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{1.0+0.25\ \mathrm{mm}}=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{1.25\ \mathrm{mm}}=7.08\times10^{-10}\ \mathrm{F}, i.e. 1.6 C01.6\,C_0. The potential VV is fixed by the battery, so the battery supplies charge ΔQ=ΔC V\Delta Q=\Delta C\,V and does work Wb=ΔC V2W_b=\Delta C\,V^2. The stored energy rises by only ΔU=12ΔC V2\Delta U=\tfrac12\Delta C\,V^2. Energy conservation, Wb=ΔU+WfieldW_b=\Delta U+W_{field}, then shows the field does work Wfield=Wb−ΔU=12ΔC V2W_{field}=W_b-\Delta U=\tfrac12\Delta C\,V^2 on the slab (the slab is drawn in). Numerically ΔC=2.66×10−10 F\Delta C=2.66\times10^{-10}\ \mathrm{F}, so W=12(2.66×10−10)(104)=1.33 μJW=\tfrac12(2.66\times10^{-10})(10^4)=1.33\ \mathrm{\mu J}. The slab is pulled in because the capacitor at fixed potential lowers its energy-plus-battery potential energy by increasing capacitance, so the field does positive work.
