Numerical answer

For the gaseous equilibrium PCl5(g)⇌PCl3(g)+Cl2(g)\mathrm{PCl_5(g)\rightleftharpoons PCl_3(g)+Cl_2(g)} the value of KpK_p at a certain temperature is 1.0 atm1.0\ \mathrm{atm}. Pure PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5} is allowed to dissociate at this temperature. The total equilibrium pressure, in atm, at which PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5} is exactly 50%50\% dissociated is ______.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 3

Start with 11 mol of PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5} and degree of dissociation α\alpha. At equilibrium the amounts are (1−α)(1-\alpha) of PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5} and α\alpha each of PCl3\mathrm{PCl_3} and Cl2\mathrm{Cl_2}, giving (1+α)(1+\alpha) mol in total. For a total pressure PP the partial pressures are (1−α)P1+α\dfrac{(1-\alpha)P}{1+\alpha} for PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5} and αP1+α\dfrac{\alpha P}{1+\alpha} for each product. Hence Kp=α2P(1+α)(1−α)=α2P1−α2K_p=\dfrac{\alpha^2P}{(1+\alpha)(1-\alpha)}=\dfrac{\alpha^2P}{1-\alpha^2}. Putting α=0.5\alpha=0.5 gives 0.25P0.75=P3\dfrac{0.25P}{0.75}=\dfrac{P}{3}. Setting Kp=1.0 atmK_p=1.0\ \mathrm{atm} gives P=3 atmP=3\ \mathrm{atm}. Check: PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5} is at 1 atm1\ \mathrm{atm} and each product at 1 atm1\ \mathrm{atm}, so Kp=1×11=1K_p=\dfrac{1\times1}{1}=1. A common mistake is to use Kp=α2P/(1−α)K_p=\alpha^2P/(1-\alpha), which would give P=1P=1.
