Let E be the ellipse (x^2/(16)+(y^2/(7)=1 and let H be the hyperbola having the same foci as E and eccentricity 3/2.

One or more options correct

Let EE be the ellipse x216+y27=1\dfrac{x^2}{16}+\dfrac{y^2}{7}=1 and let HH be the hyperbola having the same foci as EE and eccentricity 32\dfrac32. Which of the following statements is (are) correct?
  1. A. HH has the equation x24−y25=1\dfrac{x^2}{4}-\dfrac{y^2}{5}=1
  2. B. EE and HH intersect in exactly four points
  3. C. At each common point, the tangents to EE and HH are perpendicular
  4. D. The four common points are the vertices of a rectangle of area 2020
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B, C

For EE: a2=16a^2=16, b2=7b^2=7, so c2=9c^2=9 and the foci are (±3,0)(\pm3,0). For HH the foci are the same and e=32e=\frac32, so aH=ce=2a_H=\frac{c}{e}=2 and bH2=9−4=5b_H^2=9-4=5, giving x24−y25=1\frac{x^2}{4}-\frac{y^2}{5}=1: (A) true. Solving the two equations gives x2=649x^2=\frac{64}{9}, y2=359y^2=\frac{35}{9}, hence four points (±83,±353)\left(\pm\frac83,\pm\frac{\sqrt{35}}{3}\right): (B) true. The slopes of the tangents at a common point are −7x16y-\frac{7x}{16y} and 5x4y\frac{5x}{4y}, whose product is −35x264y2=−1-\frac{35x^2}{64y^2}=-1 at these points, so they are perpendicular (confocal conics cut orthogonally): (C) true. The rectangle has sides 163\frac{16}{3} and 2353\frac{2\sqrt{35}}{3} and area 32359≈21.04≠20\frac{32\sqrt{35}}{9}\approx21.04\ne20: (D) false.
