Numerical answer

The parabola y2=4xy^{2}=4x and the ellipse x24+y23=1\dfrac{x^{2}}{4}+\dfrac{y^{2}}{3}=1 have exactly two common tangents. These two tangents together with the yy-axis form a triangle. The area of this triangle, in square units, is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 8

A tangent to y2=4xy^2=4x with slope mm is y=mx+1my=mx+\frac1m. It touches the ellipse x24+y23=1\frac{x^2}{4}+\frac{y^2}{3}=1 when c2=a2m2+b2c^2=a^2m^2+b^2, i.e. 1m2=4m2+3\frac1{m^2}=4m^2+3. Setting u=m2u=m^2 gives 4u2+3u−1=04u^2+3u-1=0, so (4u−1)(u+1)=0(4u-1)(u+1)=0 and u=14u=\tfrac14 (the root u=−1u=-1 is rejected). Thus m=±12m=\pm\tfrac12 and the common tangents are y=x2+2y=\tfrac x2+2 and y=−x2−2y=-\tfrac x2-2. They meet where x2+2=−x2−2\tfrac x2+2=-\tfrac x2-2, i.e. at (−4,0)(-4,0), and cut the yy-axis at (0,2)(0,2) and (0,−2)(0,-2). The triangle has base 44 along the yy-axis and height 44, so its area is 12⋅4⋅4=8\tfrac12\cdot4\cdot4=8.
