Single correct option

A variable tangent to the ellipse x225+y29=1\dfrac{x^2}{25}+\dfrac{y^2}{9}=1 at a point in the first quadrant meets the xx-axis at AA and the yy-axis at BB. The minimum possible length of the segment ABAB is
  1. A. 55
  2. B. 2342\sqrt{34}
  3. C. 88
  4. D. 34\sqrt{34}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 88

Take the point (5cos⁡θ,3sin⁡θ)(5\cos\theta,3\sin\theta) with 0<θ<π20<\theta<\frac\pi2. The tangent is xcos⁡θ5+ysin⁡θ3=1\frac{x\cos\theta}{5}+\frac{y\sin\theta}{3}=1, which meets the axes at A(5cos⁡θ,0)A\left(\frac5{\cos\theta},0\right) and B(0,3sin⁡θ)B\left(0,\frac3{\sin\theta}\right). Then AB2=25sec⁡2θ+9csc⁡2θ=25+25tan⁡2θ+9+9cot⁡2θ=34+25tan⁡2θ+9cot⁡2θAB^2=25\sec^2\theta+9\csc^2\theta=25+25\tan^2\theta+9+9\cot^2\theta=34+25\tan^2\theta+9\cot^2\theta. By AM-GM, 25tan⁡2θ+9cot⁡2θ≥2225=3025\tan^2\theta+9\cot^2\theta\ge2\sqrt{225}=30, with equality when tan⁡2θ=35\tan^2\theta=\frac35. So ABmin⁡2=64AB^2_{\min}=64 and ABmin⁡=8=a+bAB_{\min}=8=a+b. The value 34\sqrt{34} comes from dropping the term 25tan⁡2θ+9cot⁡2θ25\tan^2\theta+9\cot^2\theta altogether, 55 is only the semi-major axis, and 2342\sqrt{34} is an arbitrary overestimate; none of them is attained by a tangent.
