The parabola y^2=8x has a focal chord PQ with P=(18,12).

One or more options correct

The parabola y2=8xy^2=8x has a focal chord PQPQ with P=(18,12)P=(18,12). Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. Q=(29, −43)Q=\left(\dfrac29,\,-\dfrac43\right)
  2. B. PQ=2009PQ=\dfrac{200}{9}
  3. C. The tangents to the parabola at PP and QQ meet at the point (−2,6)(-2,6)
  4. D. The normal at PP meets the xx-axis at (20,0)(20,0)
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B

Here 4a=84a=8, so a=2a=2, with points (2t2,4t)(2t^2,4t). P=(18,12)P=(18,12) corresponds to t=3t=3. For a focal chord the parameters satisfy t1t2=−1t_1t_2=-1, so QQ has t=−13t=-\tfrac13, i.e. Q=(29,−43)Q=\left(\tfrac29,-\tfrac43\right): (A) is true. A focal length is x1+x2+2ax_1+x_2+2a, so PQ=18+29+4=2009PQ=18+\tfrac29+4=\tfrac{200}{9}: (B) is true. The tangents at parameters t1,t2t_1,t_2 meet at (2t1t2, 2(t1+t2))=(−2, 163)(2t_1t_2,\,2(t_1+t_2))=\left(-2,\ \tfrac{16}{3}\right), which lies on the directrix but is not (−2,6)(-2,6): (C) is false. The normal at parameter tt is y=−tx+4t+2t3y=-tx+4t+2t^3, i.e. y=−3x+66y=-3x+66 for t=3t=3, cutting the xx-axis at x=22x=22, not 2020: (D) is false.
