Single correct option

The tangent at a point PP in the first quadrant on the ellipse x29+y24=1\dfrac{x^2}{9}+\dfrac{y^2}{4}=1 meets the coordinate axes at AA and BB. When the area of triangle OABOAB (OO the origin) is as small as possible, the square of the radius of the circle passing through OO, AA and BB equals
  1. A. 134\dfrac{13}{4}
  2. B. 1313
  3. C. 92\dfrac{9}{2}
  4. D. 132\dfrac{13}{2}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 132\dfrac{13}{2}

Write P=(3cos⁡ϕ,2sin⁡ϕ)P=(3\cos\phi,2\sin\phi). The tangent is xcos⁡ϕ3+ysin⁡ϕ2=1\dfrac{x\cos\phi}{3}+\dfrac{y\sin\phi}{2}=1, giving intercepts OA=3cos⁡ϕOA=\dfrac{3}{\cos\phi} and OB=2sin⁡ϕOB=\dfrac{2}{\sin\phi}. The area is 12⋅6sin⁡ϕcos⁡ϕ=6sin⁡2ϕ\dfrac12\cdot\dfrac{6}{\sin\phi\cos\phi}=\dfrac{6}{\sin2\phi}, minimum 66 at ϕ=π/4\phi=\pi/4. Then OA=32OA=3\sqrt2, OB=22OB=2\sqrt2 and AB2=18+8=26AB^2=18+8=26. The angle at OO is a right angle, so ABAB is a diameter of the circle through O,A,BO,A,B and R2=AB2/4=26/4=13/2R^2=AB^2/4=26/4=13/2. The value 13/413/4 takes AB/2AB/2 with a wrong AB2=13AB^2=13; 1313 is AB2/2AB^2/2; 9/29/2 uses only OAOA.
