JEE Advanced 2018 Paper 1 Mathematics: Paragraph 2

Consider the parabola y2=4xy^2=4x and a focal chord PQPQ with P=(t2,2t)P=(t^2,2t), t>0t>0, and QQ the other end of the chord. The tangents to the parabola at PP and at QQ meet at the point TT. Use this configuration, with tt as the variable parameter, to answer the following two questions.

Question 1

Single correct option

The locus of the mid-point of the chord PQPQ, as tt varies over (0,∞)(0,\infty), is
  1. A. y2=2(x−1)y^2=2(x-1)
  2. B. y2=4(x−1)y^2=4(x-1)
  3. C. y2=2x−1y^2=2x-1
  4. D. y2=x−1y^2=x-1
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) y2=2(x−1)y^2=2(x-1)

A focal chord of y2=4xy^2=4x through P(t2,2t)P(t^2,2t) has the other end Q(1t2,−2t)Q\left(\frac1{t^2},-\frac2t\right), since the parameters satisfy t1t2=−1t_1t_2=-1. The mid-point is (h,k)(h,k) with h=12(t2+1t2)h=\frac12\left(t^2+\frac1{t^2}\right) and k=t−1tk=t-\frac1t. Squaring, k2=t2+1t2−2=2h−2k^2=t^2+\frac1{t^2}-2=2h-2. So the locus is y2=2(x−1)y^2=2(x-1), a parabola with vertex (1,0)(1,0). The other options do not satisfy k2=2h−2k^2=2h-2; for instance y2=4(x−1)y^2=4(x-1) is what one gets by forgetting that the midpoint halves both coordinates, and y2=x−1y^2=x-1 results from dropping the factor 22 in k2=t2+t−2−2k^2=t^2+t^{-2}-2.

Question 2

Single correct option

The minimum possible area of triangle PQTPQT is
  1. A. 22
  2. B. 44
  3. C. 88
  4. D. 1616
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 44

Tangents at PP and QQ are ty=x+t2ty=x+t^2 and −yt=x+1t2-\frac yt=x+\frac1{t^2}. Subtracting eliminates xx: y(t+1t)=t2−1t2y\left(t+\frac1t\right)=t^2-\frac1{t^2}, so y=t−1ty=t-\frac1t and then x=−1x=-1, hence T=(−1,t−1t)T=\left(-1,t-\frac1t\right) lies on the directrix. Using the determinant formula for the area with PP, QQ, TT gives Area=12(t+1t)3\text{Area}=\frac12\left(t+\frac1t\right)^3. By AM-GM, t+1t≥2t+\frac1t\ge2 with equality at t=1t=1, so the minimum is 12⋅8=4\frac12\cdot8=4. Check at t=1t=1: P=(1,2)P=(1,2), Q=(1,−2)Q=(1,-2), T=(−1,0)T=(-1,0) gives area 12⋅4⋅2=4\frac12\cdot4\cdot2=4.
