Single correct option

The complex ion [Co(en)2Cl2]+[\mathrm{Co(en)_2Cl_2}]^{+} (en = ethane-1,2-diamine, a strong-field bidentate ligand) is prepared. The total number of stereoisomers possible for this ion, and its spin-only magnetic moment in BM, are respectively
  1. A. 3 and 0
  2. B. 2 and 0
  3. C. 3 and 4.90
  4. D. 4 and 3.87

Answer: (A) 3 and 0

Cobalt is in the +3+3 state (Co3+\mathrm{Co^{3+}}, 3d63d^6): the ion carries +1+1, en is neutral and two chlorides give −2-2. Ethylenediamine is a strong-field ligand, so the six dd electrons pair up in the t2gt_{2g} set (t2g6eg0t_{2g}^6e_g^0, d2sp3d^2sp^3), with no unpaired electron, so μ=n(n+2)=0\mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)}=0 BM. For the octahedral [M(AA)2X2][M(AA)_2X_2] type there are two geometrical isomers. The trans isomer has a mirror plane and is optically inactive (one form). The cis isomer lacks any mirror plane or inversion centre and exists as a pair of non-superimposable mirror images (Δ\Delta and Λ\Lambda). Total stereoisomers =1+2=3=1+2=3. Counting only the geometrical isomers gives 2, while a high-spin d6d^6 ion would give 4.904.90 BM.
