Numerical answer

Using the spin-only formula, compute the sum of the squares of the magnetic moments (in BM2\mathrm{BM}^2) of the following four species: [Fe(CN)6]3−\mathrm{[Fe(CN)_6]^{3-}}, [CoF6]3−\mathrm{[CoF_6]^{3-}}, Ni(CO)4\mathrm{Ni(CO)_4} and [MnCl4]2−\mathrm{[MnCl_4]^{2-}} (atomic numbers: Mn = 25, Fe = 26, Co = 27, Ni = 28). Assume CN−\mathrm{CN^-} is a strong-field ligand and F−\mathrm{F^-} and Cl−\mathrm{Cl^-} are weak-field ligands.

Answer: 62

The spin-only moment is μ=n(n+2)\mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)} BM, so μ2=n(n+2)\mu^2=n(n+2). Fe3+^{3+} is d5d^5 and with strong-field CN−\mathrm{CN^-} gives low-spin t2g5t_{2g}^5 with n=1n=1, so μ2=3\mu^2=3. Co3+^{3+} is d6d^6 and with weak-field F−\mathrm{F^-} gives high-spin t2g4eg2t_{2g}^4e_g^2 with n=4n=4, so μ2=24\mu^2=24. In Ni(CO)4\mathrm{Ni(CO)_4} nickel is Ni(0); CO is a strong-field ligand, so the ten valence electrons pair up as 3d103d^{10} in a tetrahedral sp3sp^3 complex, with no unpaired electrons, hence μ2=0\mu^2=0. Mn2+^{2+} is d5d^5 and tetrahedral with weak-field Cl−\mathrm{Cl^-}, so it is high spin with n=5n=5 and μ2=35\mu^2=35. The sum is 3+24+0+35=623+24+0+35=62.
