Numerical answer

A battery of emf 12 V12\ \mathrm{V} and internal resistance 1 Ω1\ \Omega is connected to an infinite ladder network. Each section consists of a series resistor of 1 Ω1\ \Omega followed by a shunt resistor of 2 Ω2\ \Omega connected across the line after it, and the sections repeat without end. Find the power (in watts) dissipated in the third shunt resistor counted from the battery. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 0.50

Let RxR_x be the resistance of the whole ladder; removing one section leaves an identical ladder, so Rx=1+2Rx2+RxR_x=1+\dfrac{2R_x}{2+R_x}, which gives Rx2−Rx−2=0R_x^2-R_x-2=0 and Rx=2 ΩR_x=2\ \Omega. Total resistance =2+1=3 Ω=2+1=3\ \Omega, so I=12/3=4 AI=12/3=4\ \mathrm{A}. In the first section the series resistor carries 44 A, dropping 44 V. The node voltage after it is V1=12−4×1−4×1=4 VV_1=12-4\times1-4\times1=4\ \mathrm{V} (internal drop 44 V, series drop 44 V). The first shunt 2 Ω2\ \Omega and the rest of the ladder (2 Ω2\ \Omega) are in parallel across V1V_1, so each carries 22 A. Each following section repeats this: the current entering is halved at every shunt. The shunt currents are 2, 1, 0.52,\ 1,\ 0.5 A, so the third shunt carries 0.50.5 A and dissipates P=I2R=0.25×2=0.50 WP=I^2R=0.25\times2=0.50\ \mathrm{W}.
