Numerical answer

In a circuit, a cell of emf 18 V18\ \mathrm{V} and internal resistance 1 Ω1\ \Omega is connected in series with a 5 Ω5\ \Omega resistor to two junctions aa and bb. Between aa and bb are two parallel branches. Branch 1 is a 6 Ω6\ \Omega resistor. Branch 2 is a 4 μF4\ \mu\mathrm{F} capacitor in series with an ideal cell of emf 3 V3\ \mathrm{V}, connected so that the positive terminal of this cell faces the capacitor and the negative terminal faces junction bb, with junction aa at the higher potential. After a long time the charge on the capacitor, in μC\mu\mathrm{C}, is

Answer: 24

After a long time no current flows in the capacitor branch, so the steady current flows only through the internal resistance, the 5 Ω5\ \Omega resistor and the 6 Ω6\ \Omega resistor: I=181+5+6=1.5 AI=\dfrac{18}{1+5+6}=1.5\ \mathrm{A}. The potential difference between aa and bb equals the drop across the 6 Ω6\ \Omega resistor, Vab=1.5×6=9 VV_{ab}=1.5\times6=9\ \mathrm{V}. In branch 2, going from aa to bb we cross the capacitor (voltage VCV_C) and then the 3 V3\ \mathrm{V} cell from its positive to its negative terminal, a drop of 3 V3\ \mathrm{V}. With zero current in that branch, Vab=VC+3V_{ab}=V_C+3, so VC=9−3=6 VV_C=9-3=6\ \mathrm{V}. The charge is Q=CVC=4×6=24 μCQ=CV_C=4\times6=24\ \mu\mathrm{C}. Taking the cell as aiding instead would give VC=12 VV_C=12\ \mathrm{V} and 48 μC48\ \mu\mathrm{C}, which is not the case for the stated polarity.
