Numerical answer

In a metre-bridge experiment the unknown resistance XX is in the left gap and a resistance box RR is in the right gap. The box is set to R=100 ΩR=100\ \Omega with a possible error of 1%1\%, and the jockey position gives a balance length ℓ=50.0 cm\ell=50.0\ \mathrm{cm} from the left end with an uncertainty of ±0.5 cm\pm0.5\ \mathrm{cm}. The wire is exactly 100 cm100\ \mathrm{cm} long. Taking the maximum possible error, the percentage error in the value of XX obtained from X=R(ℓ100−ℓ)X=R\left(\dfrac{\ell}{100-\ell}\right) is ______.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 3

First note that XX is in the left gap with balance length ℓ\ell measured from the left end, so XR=ℓ100−ℓ\dfrac{X}{R}=\dfrac{\ell}{100-\ell}, i.e. X=R ℓ100−ℓX=R\,\dfrac{\ell}{100-\ell}. Take logarithms and differentiate for the maximum error: ΔXX=ΔRR+Δℓℓ+Δℓ100−ℓ\dfrac{\Delta X}{X}=\dfrac{\Delta R}{R}+\dfrac{\Delta \ell}{\ell}+\dfrac{\Delta\ell}{100-\ell}, because an error Δℓ\Delta\ell in ℓ\ell produces an error of the same magnitude in 100−ℓ100-\ell. With ℓ=50\ell=50 and Δℓ=0.5\Delta\ell=0.5: 0.550+0.550=0.02=2%\dfrac{0.5}{50}+\dfrac{0.5}{50}=0.02=2\%. Adding the resistance-box error 1%1\% gives 3%3\%. Hence the maximum percentage error in XX is 33. Remember that for a product or quotient the maximum fractional errors add, whatever the sign of the exponent, and that the error in the box setting and the error in the length are independent so they are simply summed in the worst case. Numerically X=100×5050=100 ΩX=100\times\dfrac{50}{50}=100\ \Omega with ΔX=3 Ω\Delta X=3\ \Omega, i.e. 97 Ω97\ \Omega to 103 Ω103\ \Omega at the extremes.
